Day 1 : Travel north through old Settler Towns like Uitenhage, Wolwefontein and Jansenville. Arrive in Graaff-Reinet which overlooks the imposing 1400m high Spandaukop Mountain. The town is also known as the ‘Gem of the Karoo’, as it has more national monuments than any other town in South Africa. Once booked in you can do a guided walk (or drive) to various places of interest. In the late afternoon visit the ‘Valley of Desolation’ where you look from a safe view point over the awe-inspiring, gigantic Karoo Basin. This has an encircling Mountain Range in the far distance – where about 250 million years ago Dinosaurs roamed. Share a magnificent sunset.

Day 2: Start the day with breakfast and then take a ride to Nieu Bethesda to visit to the curious ‘Owl House’ . Take part in a ‘Fossil Tour’ where you can observe the 300 million year old Fossils still embedded in the Sandstone. Light lunch then travel to a local farm to view the only private Fossil Exhibition in South Africa. Visit a Bushman Cave complete with San Drawings. Continue to the Mountain Zebra National Park in Cradock, where you will be able to see some of the 250+ Zebras and other animals. After dinner watch the magnificent South African night sky with its shooting stars visible on a clear Karoo night.

Day 3: In the morning travel through Cradock, Bedford, Adelaide and Fort Beaufort and the foot of the Kagga Mountain. Visit old Martel Tower, a stronghold built during the Frontier Wars between the English Troops and the various Xhosa tribes in the 17 & 18th century. Travel through the 400 million year-old Ecca Pass to Grahamstown. Known as the “City of Saints” because of the 40 places of worship in this town. Visit the key museums then take a last view of the town, turn south-east and arrive back in Port Elizabeth late afternoon.
