This train tour departs on Saturdays and Sundays at 08h05 from Cape Town. The destination is the Art Deco “Elgin Railway Market,” an especially crafted Art Park experience. The market situated within an old apple warehouse which has been converted into a bustling Steampunk, Art Deco market. The market excursion boasts local food and craft vendors, live music and is the gateway to the beautiful Elgin Valley.
Elgin
Elgin is a large, lush area of land, circled by mountains, in the Overberg region of South Africa. This broad upland valley lies about 70 km southeast of Cape Town, just beyond the Hottentots Holland Mountains.
The History
The Ceres Railway track was originally built at the turn of the 20th century, starting in July 1910 and was completed in May 1912. The line was built using second-hand material.
Part of Ceres Rail Company’s mission is to help preserve and promote South African Rail Heritage, which involves restoring and refurbishing old locomotives and coaches. We love sharing this with all tourists.
The Experience
The journey departs from Harbour Bridge Platform (close to the Cape Town International Convention Centre). It then meanders through Cape Town and its surrounds. The tour continues reaching the majestic Sir Lowrys Pass. Arriving at the foot of the pass, the train embarks on an epic climb up one of the steepest railway lines in South Africa. Cresting the peak, the train snakes it way into the lush Elgin Valley before arriving at the Elgin Railway Market. A unique, and ultimately, a once in a life time experience.
Onboard the train, guests can enjoy the breath-taking scenery from various seating options. Sip on drinks from the fully licensed cash bar. There are experienced barista’s and snacks are also provided for nibbling on in the dining car.
This train tour is suited to all ages and promises to be an experience never to forget. To top this all off, kids under 3 travel free.
